PALMYRA'S EDWARDIAN FRONTAGE
DATES BACK TO 1912.

In 1911, Alexander Gardiner, an accountant of Elizabeth Street, Elsternwick, purchased the land, known as ‘Altona’. Gardiner immediately commenced building an eleven-roomed brick house, which was completed in 1912. He named the house “Palmyra”. The house was valued at £130 pounds. Gardiner continued to live in the house until 1925.

With the addition of several extensions to the back of the house, Palmyra became Colaba Private Nursing Home. It was later closed and was offered for sale. All the additions to the back of the home were demolished and Sheridan Hall Retirement Village, with its 20 apartments was erected on the land.

The original home was retained as it is part of the Glen Eira Historical Precinct and restored to its former beauty in 2004. The Village underwent a name change from Sheridan Hall after opening and is now registered Palmyra Retirement Village
